Next Emoji Update Will Include 200 New Skin Tone Variations

To represent minority and interracial couples.

The Unicode Consortium has announced its next update, Emoji 13.1, that will add over 200 new skin tone combinations to two-person Emoji groupings depicting couples.

An attempt to represent interracial and minority couples, a wider range of skin tones will be applied to two core Emojis: “couple with heart” and “couples kissing.” To accompany, seven additional graphics will be introduced to the keyboard: “heart on fire,” “mending heart,” “woman with beard,” “person with beard,” “face exhaling,” “face in clouds” and “face with spiral eyes.”

Emoji 13.1 is expected to release sometime in 2021, after version 13.0 has fully launched this fall.
