Giant Vulva Sculpture Causes Outrage in Brazil
The 108-foot-tall installation is the work of artist Juliana Notari.
Artist Juliana Notari has sparked controversy with her latest work, a vulva-shaped sculpture installed on a hillside of the Usina de Arte, an art park in northeastern Brazil.
Titled Diva, the yonic installation measures at over 108 feet tall and, according to a statement posted to Notari’s Facebook, is meant to “question the relationship between nature and culture in our phallocentric and anthropocentric western society,” according to a translation by CNN. Unsurprisingly, the work has stirred controversy and even outrage. Polemicist and political pundit Olavo de Carvalho, widely known as one of the biggest ideological influences on Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro (who recently declared that he would never legalize abortion in the country), criticized the sculpture on Twitter, proposing the sculpture be challenged with a giant penis.
