This month, it will mark 14 years since Twilight hit theaters, and we’re finally finding out how Henry Cavill felt about the book’s author, Stephenie Meyer, wanting him to play Edward Cullen.
It turns out, Cavill wasn’t aware at the time of the casting. “I didn’t know about the movie,” Cavill said in the October 26 episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast.”I didn’t know about them wanting to cast me and the internet wasn’t quite the tool that it is now and so I only found out afterwards.”
The Man of Steel star added, “I was like, ‘Oh OK, that would have been cool.’”
In case you weren’t aware, Meyer had previously revealed she envisioned Cavill to play the iconic vampire character. However, in a 2007 blog post, she expressed she was disappointed upon finding out Cavill was too old for the role. “The most disappointing thing for me is losing my perfect Edward. Henry Cavill is now 24 years old,” she wrote at the time. “Let us have a moment of quiet in which to mourn…”
Instead, the role ended up going to Robert Pattinson, who’s three years younger than Cavill. At the time Twilight premiered, Pattison was 22 years old. In the same blog post, Meyer expressed her excitement about him getting cast. “I am ecstatic with Summit’s choice for Edward,” she wrote. “There are very few actors who can look both dangerous and beautiful at the same time, and even fewer who I can picture in my head as Edward. Robert Pattinson is going to be amazing.”
