boygenius Release 3 New Songs and Announce New Debut Album 'The Record'
Here’s how Phoebe Bridgers, Lucy Dacus and Julien Baker reunited.
Phoebe Bridgers, Lucy Dacus, and Julien Baker aka boygenius are back.
The iconic trio have returned with three new songs, “$20,” “Emily I’m Sorry,” and “True Blue.” Additionally, they announced a new debut album titled The Record, which drops on March 31.
boygenius could have taken this time to work on solo projects, but something about uniting felt right. “It’s so hard to relate to people. Except for those guys. Being with them makes it so much less dark,” Bridgers told Rolling Stone. Baker added, “There’s a realm in which I feel permitted to be ambitious in this band, in a way that I can’t for my own solo stuff, because it’s something shared with people that I love who are the greatest songwriters ever. I feel an uncomplicated pride about it.”
boygenius’ return was sparked during the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. “Covid happened, and I didn’t feel superproductive,” Bridgers said. “Boygenius was on my mind a lot, and we had been texting, like, ‘Oh, my God, what the f-ck is happening on the Earth?’ I just wanted to talk to my friends. Then I started writing this song and was like,
‘Oh, this is clearly a boygenius song.’”
It turns out, each member of the band had been wanting to return but felt nervous. “We all thought that we were more excited than the other person,” Bridgers added.
