Kim Kardashian Purchases Necklace Worn by Princess Diana at Sotheby's Auction
Outbidding three other buyers at the sale.
Kim Kardashian is keeping up with the Royal Family, getting her hands on a pendant worn by Princess Diana in the ’80s at a Sotheby’s auction in London.
The reality star outbid three others on a cross-shaped necklace via a representative at the auction house’s “Royal and Noble” sale that took place on Wednesday night. The final bid was at £163,800 GBP (approximately $202,000 USD), which was more than double the estimated price.
The piece, also dubbed the Attallah Cross, weighs 5.25 carats and features square-cut amethysts and circular-cut diamonds. It was made in the ’20s by the jeweler Garrard, and Lady Di wore it to a charity gala in London in 1987 for the nonprofit organization Birthright. The princess wore the design with a Catherine Walker dress, pictured above.
According to Sotheby’s London, Princess Diana was the only person to wear the necklace in public and this particular auction was the first time it was shown again. “We are delighted that this piece has found a new lease of life within the hands of another globally famous name,” the auction house’s head of jewelry Kristian Spofforth said in a statement.
In addition to the recent sale, Sotheby’s New York is slated to put a Victor Edelstein dress worn by Lady Di up for auction at its “The One” live auction scheduled for January 27.
