Between Netflix’s Tinder Swindler and the underlying “pig butchering” trend, romance scams have always been the infamous hype. If you haven’t heard of pig butchering before, it’s a romance scam term that refers to “fattening them up” and then “slaughtering them… As in, fake a romance, and then run their pockets.”
Ironically, World Scam Prevention Day falls on October 3rd, the day Aaron Samuels (played by Jonathan Bennett) turned to Cady Heron (played by Lindsay Lohan) in math class and asked her what day it was. As she lets out a gasp — cause her biggest crush just spoke to her — she responds “It’s October 3rd,” marking a holiday for Gen Z and Millennials.
According to the FBI, crypto scams like pig butchering “now serve as the largest financial scam in the US, totaling over $3 billion.” Naturally, people think they’re immune, but even younger adults are reporting being scammed by “lovers,” too.
