EXCLUSIVE: Jade Cropper Debuts FW23 Collection in Fight Club-Inspired Film

Rising Stockholm-based designer Jade Cropper is debuting her Fall/Winter 2023 collection in a short film.

Shared exclusively by Hypebae, the visual is directed by Nim Kyong Ran and produced by Pine, showcasing the latest range in a Fight Club-inspired setting. The striking film spotlights femininity, pushing the boundaries of how women and femininity are represented throughout the fashion industry.

“In Jade Cropper’s world, sophistication meets grit in perfect harmony. Ripped and torn becomes couture. Silk gets dressed down and denim gets dressed up. It’s an echo of both past and future, that deceptively captures the desires of today. Elegant, edgy and empowering as f-ck,” director Nim Kyong Ran told Hypebae. “So to launch her new collection I wanted to create a film as groundbreaking as her. Playing with the idea of her ripped and torn aesthetics, in a female fight club film. Fashion films have a habit of depicting women as pretty, dainty things to be admired. This film turns that custom upside down. Instead of having anonymous models walking on tidy rows, our ladies take their outfits for a spin in forceful fights. They’re fierce, violent and gnarly, everything you’d never expect from a fashion film.”

As for the collection itself, functionality meets femininity in the form of ripped and torn silk dresses, as well as baggy jeans that are juxtaposed with cropped tops. Handmade in Cropper’s studio using deadstock materials, the garments combine sportswear with denim, knitwear and more.

“The theme really came from the fact that I have been so busy so I’ve hardly seen anything other than the walk to the bus and my studio. I took different elements; concrete, energy, movement, sophistication and urbanism to create my own world, a world where the ordinary of everyday life can be extraordinary,” the designer shared. “I like to find inspiration from what is not considered beautiful and I think there is beauty in these habitual tasks; standing in line at the supermarket, waiting for a coffee, the walk from the office to the metro. I wanted to create a collection that allows the wearer to go out and be able to face their everyday battles whilst also looking good, garments that can be worn for these day-to-day moments as well as for a specific occasion, to leave the wearer feeling both elegant and empowered.”
