'Scream VI' Star Jasmin Savoy on Rewriting Anika and Mindy's Romance: "We Need an Epic Kiss"

Scream VI actor Jasmin Savoy Brown discusses her on-screen romance for her cover story with Them.

According to Savoy, the producers of Scream VI were a dream team. “It almost feels a bit counterintuitive because this is a group of white men,” she joked boldly. “But they’re so aware of their position. They’re aware of what they’re not aware of if that makes sense. They’re really open, there’s no ego with them. And I’ve experienced that rarely in my career.”

As for what they weren’t aware of — everything queer. In the film, Savoy’s character Mindy, and her girlfriend Anika (played by Devyn Nekoda), are the main couple — even overshadowing the main character Samantha’s secret romance. However, when it comes time for Anika’s insane death, Savoy felt it was missing a certain je ne sais quois.
“I was like, ‘Hey guys, love this scene, it’s so sick. But I think adding a kiss would make it even better. I think it’s important. Specifically, with Anika’s death, I was like, ‘If y’all really want to break some hearts, we need an epic kiss right here.’ They were like, ‘OK, let’s try it.’ And then we did it once, and I think it was Tyler that came into the room and was like, ‘I’m crying, let’s keep it.’ It was just that simple.”
