Kesha Reveals She Almost Died After Egg-Freezing Procedure
“It was horrifying,” says the singer.
Kesha has opened up about a near-death experience she had earlier this year after a standard fertility procedure, which led to a rare complication.
“I almost died in January,” she told SELF in a new interview.
Last year, she was diagnosed with common variable immunodeficiency (CVID), which “is a primary immune deficiency disease characterized by low levels of protective antibodies and an increased risk of infections,” according to the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.
Her CVID condition along with the egg-freezing procedure contributed to the almost fatal incident. After performing in the Bahamas for New Year’s Eve, Kesha found herself too weak to walk, which resulted in her going to the hospital. She then was transferred to a Miami hospital for nine days.
“I finally feel recovered, but it took a couple months,” she said. “It was horrifying.”
She added, “I just was taking my reproductive health into my own hands,” she says. “And I stand by everyone doing that and [honoring] your body.”
These days, the TikTok artist is prioritizing her health and wellness more than ever. “I learned after my diagnosis that sleep is the most important thing,” she explained. “I took that for granted for, God, about 29, 30 years. I feel like I’m just playing catch-up on my teens and 20s, still. But I try to get as much sleep as possible, and I have to protect that fiercely.”
