The Most Common Period Care Myths, Debunked

August founder Nadya Okamoto addresses TikTok’s biggest misconceptions.

43% of youth are getting their education from TikTok — but should they? According to Nadya Okamoto, founder of August menstrual care, the app can be both helpful and harmful, meaning your period care facts may not be accurate.

Here are the top three period myths that need to be debunked, according to Okamoto.

Myth #1: You can’t swim on your period.

Truth: While your period doesn’t completely stop in water, which is another common misconception, your flow does lessen due to the pressure of the water. Rest assured it’s still there, but moving at a slower pace.

Myth #2: You have to take your tampon out to pee.

Truth: Period blood and urine do not come from the same hole- tampons are inserted into the vaginal opening, and urine comes from your urethra. Outside of this, it is believed that peeing with a tampon in can spread bacteria, when in reality, urine is very sterile and is not likely to cause infection.

Myth #3: You will get Toxic Shock Syndrome if you use a tampon.

Truth: This myth has a tiny bit of truth, but not entirely. While there is still a chance of contracting TSS by leaving a tampon in for too long, the chances are slim at most. If you are changing your tampons regularly, and maintaining proper hygiene, you have nothing to worry about.

While you’re here, build emotional intimacy, according to Hinge.
