IDEA Releases a Raw New Photo Book

“Anne Imhof’s DOOM documented by Tess Petronio”

From intern to published photographer, Tess Petronio knows that if you don’t ask, you don’t get. In her latest project, presented by IDEA, the photographer captured the behind-the-scenes of Anne Imhof’s performance work, while initially hired as an intern. The result? A striking new photo book that offers an intimate look through Petronio’s lens.

Petronio first learned about acclaimed artist Anne Imhof back when she was at art school, and reached out to Imhof for an internship. Wanting to be a part of the artist’s world and learn about her creative process, Imhof invited Petronio to New York to intern during her largest work to date, titled “DOOM: House of Hope.” A three-hour performance loosely based on Romeo and Juliet, the cast included around 50 dancers and artists, with Petronio observing and helping as needed.

Imhof suggested that Petronio photograph the cast as character studies, and this is how the images seen in the book came about. Serving as snapshots of life beyond the Park Avenue Armory, where the performance took place, the photos document candid moments of the cast. Seen in various settings from the dance studio to the local diner and bars where they gathered after shows, the photographs intimately reflect the friendships that developed throughout the performance. Looking at the photos, you would not assume that these were images of colleagues, highlighting the strength of connection that can be formed when working together in a creative team.

The book is bound in a way to mimic a screenplay, between pale green covers with 3 Chicago screws and sketched cover art by tattoo artist Dean Violante.

The book first launched at Dover Street Market’s Frieze 25 event in London and is now available globally via the IDEA website.
