RIMOWA Is Celebrating the Queer Community With the Launch of a New Photo Book

Shot by New York photographer Ryan McGinley.

RIMOWA is trading hard-shell suitcases for high-art publishing with the launch of ‘Der Eigene’ Issue Five. The German luxury brand famously revived the historic queer magazine back in 2022, and for the latest installment, it’s handed the creative keys over to New York photographer Ryan McGinley.

Known for his raw, sun-drenched portraits of youth culture, McGinley uses the pages to document his personal circle of friends and collaborators in New York City. The issue focuses on themes of movement, intimacy and self-possession, moving past the idea of travel as just simple transit to look at how exploring the world reshapes who we are.

The zine is packed with a personal foreword by McGinley alongside candid portraits, instant film snapshots and vulnerable essays from fifteen distinct queer contributors, including prominent figures like Jari Jones and Ceyenne Doroshow. Rather than commercial product placement, the project functions purely as a platform for unfiltered artistic expression.

The fifth edition of ‘Der Eigene’ is limited to just 500 complimentary copies worldwide. You can snag a free one at select global indie bookshops, including BookMarc in New York and Climax Books in London.

Head to the brand’s website for more.
