SMITH Brings Back a ‘90s Classic with the Return of the Sliders

The same interchangeable lens concept that changed eyewear gets a modern update.

Some designs don’t need reinvention. They just wait for the right moment to make a comeback. For SMITH Optics, that moment is now, and the brand has officially relaunched its Sliders sunglasses, a cult-favorite design from 1995 that changed the eyewear game.

When the original debuted, it was the first to feature a patented dual-lens interchangeable system, an innovation that shaped the future of SMITH’s snow goggles and performance eyewear. Thirty years later, the same rebellious spirit returns, wrapped in sleek, modern materials that speak to both nostalgia and next-gen performance.

The new Sliders arrive as part of SMITH’s Archive Collection which is a line dedicated to reviving classics with subtle updates that preserve their original DNA. The frames still feature that unmistakable 8-base wrap silhouette, built for action sports but styled for everyday life. Each pair includes three interchangeable lenses to suit different moods, looks and light conditions. It all harkens back to SMITH’s early belief that performance gear shouldn’t be confined to one arena. As the brand puts it, this drop speaks to “culture seekers,” those who chase community, style and the freedom to move between worlds with ease.

Performance-wise, the latest Sliders are all about retro refinement. They’re made with Evolve™ bio-based frame material, making them lightweight and eco-conscious without sacrificing durability. Meanwhile, ChromaPop™ lens technology enhances contrast and color so details pop in every environment, whether you’re skating a sun-bleached city block or catching a mountain sunset. AutoLock hinges and megol temple grips make the fit feel as purposeful as it looks—smart, secure and ready for motion.

Available in bold finishes like Matte Olive Oil with ChromaPop™ Brown, Electric Supernova with ChromaPop™ Blue Mirror and the stealth-ready Matte Black with ChromaPop™ Black, the lineup pays homage to the ‘90s attitude that made Sliders an icon in the first place. Each pair includes a custom Archive Collection fleece pouch and two extra lenses. These details elevate the drop from gear to collector’s item. “Born in ’95, reborn today,” as SMITH’s campaign says, these are for those who’d rather stand out than stay still.

SMITH’s Sliders started as a proof of concept for interchangeable performance eyewear and has now evolved into a timeless statement piece that bridges eras, sports and subcultures. From snow to surf, streets to slopes, the design embodies the same fearless energy that defined 1995. And now, they’re built for a new generation.

Priced at $197 USD, the latest SMITH Sliders are available now on the brand’s official site.
