Anya Taylor-Joy Is Playing Princess Peach in Upcoming 'Super Mario Bros.' Film

Illumination and Nintendo have announced the voiceover cast for their upcoming Super Mario Bros. animated film.
The star-studded roster is led by Chris Pratt as Mario and Charlie Day as Luigi, followed by Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach. Elsewhere, Jack Black will play the role of Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad and Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong. “Each voice actor was cast for their ability to capture the unique spirit of their character,” an official statement read, according to Deadline.
Upon the reveal, the internet has responded with memes and tweets pointing out that no members of the cast are actually Italian. “Chris Pratt playing Mario is Italiaphobia and I’m tired of acting like it isn’t,” one wrote, while more users noted the backlash the actor faced in 2019 for his “infamously anti-LGBTQ+” church. Other fans have also put together their own take on the cast, naming actors like Robert De Niro and Danny DeVito for the roles of Mario and Luigi. As of now, it’s unclear whether the actors will be playing each of their roles in an Italian accent.
The Super Mario Bros. animated film is scheduled to hit theaters on December 21, 2022.
