Kim Petras Makes Trans History With No. 1 Hit on Billboard Hot 100
Becoming the first ever non-binary and openly trans artist to achieve the accolade.
Kim Petras has made history by becoming the first ever non-binary and openly trans artist to achieve a BillboardHot 100 No. 1 hit.
Petras’ collaboration with Sam Smith, “Unholy,” saw a steady climb on the charts since its release on September 22. The single gained popularity after going viral on TikTok and currently boasts over 200 million streams on Spotify and 27 million views on YouTube — making the Los Angeles-based singer’s dream of having a number-one song a reality.
The single serves as the first No. 1 hit for both Smith and Petras, making it a turning point for them and the communities they represent. “Unholy” is also the first song with a music video prominently featuring a gay porn star — Paddy O’Brian — to go to No. 1, marking yet another memorable achievement.
Petras shared a post about the news on Instagram, with a caption that read, “NUMBER ONEEEE HOT 100! I’m so grateful. Sam I can’t thank you enough for riding with me for years at this point. I’m so honored to be a part of your first number one in the US which you should have 500 of at this point. I love you forever angel Sam 💗.
Renowned collaborators of the single include ILYA, Blake Slatkin, Cirkut, Omer Fendi and Jimmy Napes. By reaching the top of BillboardHot 100, “Unholy” dethrones Steve Lacy’s “Bad Habit,” a track which had previously held the No.1 spot for the last three weeks.
