TikTok is known for breathing new life into age-old makeup hacks and underpainting is the latest beauty method to experience a renaissance.

In a more than helpful tutorial by OG beauty guru and makeup artist Katie Jane Hughes, the “trend” lives up to its name as it suggests applying your bronzer, blush and concealer underneath your foundation for a more seamless and natural look. Using cream products work best as they effortlessly blend into the skin, ensuring a coverage that isn’t cakey.

Hughes starts by applying a soft bronzer around the perimeter of her face, then taps a bright cream blush into the apple of her cheeks. The key is to use different brushes for each product to prevent a muddy finish. After blending in her bronzer and blush, Hughes goes back in with a concealer that is slightly lighter than her skin, dotting it in the areas where she didn’t use bronzer and blush. Utilizing a small, tapered fluffy blush, Hughes diffuses her concealer, blending it all together. While she doesn’t apply foundation in her TikTok video, completing your look with a lightweight foundation or a BB cream will tie everything together.

The result is a beautiful no-makeup makeup look that gives the appearance you’ve been blessed with model-worthy DNA.

Take a look at Katie Jane Hughes’ underpainting tutorial below for an in-depth look.
