EXCLUSIVE: Marimekko x adidas' Fourth Collaboration Celebrates Movement and Expression

Featuring a sports hijab and an all-new UltraBOOST.

Finnish lifestyle design house Marimekko is joining forces with adidas for the fourth time to unveil a new limited-edition capsule. Blending the house’s printmaking expertise with adidas’ running innovations, the collection seeks to breathe life back into activewear. The new drop features a range of unique prints designed by Maija Isola and Annika Rimala, two Finnish designers from Marimekko. Drawing inspiration from silhouettes of the female body, Isola’s prints are influenced by a series of “Ihminen” patterns, translating to “human” in Finnish.

According to Marimekko’s Creative Director Rebekka Bay, the brand’s philosophy continues to be “to empower people to be happy as they are through our colorful art of printmaking.” She adds: “This collection is an ode to women and the way they move through the world, with the prints feeling as fresh now as when they were first crafted five decades ago.” Similarly, adidas Global’s Senior Vice President of Sportswear and Training, Aimee Arana says: “We understand that movement takes many guises, so we wanted to ensure pieces in this drop catered to different sports our community enjoy — from running to dance — whilst tailoring pieces to their specific needs.”

Fusing adidas’ performance with expressive prints, the freeing collection offers a different print for each facet of fitness including “Gabriel” for running, “Jokeri” for sportswear and “Jenkka” and “Tundra” for training pieces. Standout pieces from the collaboration include the adidas x Marimekko UltraBOOST 22 silhouette, available in a vivid “Red and Collegiate Navy” colorway alongside a supportive sport hijab in a subtle blue-grey colorway. Continuing adidas’ pledge to “End Plastic Waste,” the collection has been made in part with recycled materials with at least 50% of the UltraBOOST upper made up of recycled content. Specially designed to ensure that the fabric doesn’t hinder the athlete’s ability to move freely, the hijab was made with soft and breathable fabric which incorporates innovative adidas performance technology.

The new adidas x Marimekko collaboration is available now from adidas’ website.
