Was 'Don't Worry Darling' Really About Female Pleasure?
“The comments Olivia Wilde made about the film… definitely coming back to bite her.”
Don’t Worry Darling has made headlines for less than lovely reasons this year. Before its debut, director Olivia Wilde revealed that the film “aims to flip the script on how female pleasure is represented in films.” After its debut, viewers have a few questions.
The film was released on Friday September 23 and in just a few days, Twitter has been up in arms over how revolutionary the movie was not. Before the debut, Wilde received her fair share of backlash but one aspect people were excited about was her approach to female pleasure as the director. “Men don’t come in this film, only women here,” she revealed in August.
For starters, the movie only featured two short sex scenes that did admittedly feature women experiencing pleasure. However, the sex scenes were not integral to the storyline which brought fans back to one concern they suspected when Harry Styles was accused of queer baiting: was Wilde merely using buzz words to get people to tune in?
Well, Twitter has a few words:
This movie is about all BUT “female pleasure” like- it’s literally the opposite, who markets it like that #DontWorryDarling

Overall, the movie had potential but it just took so many turns it didn’t have to. Critics reviews made sound terrible than it was. The comments Wilde made about the film being about “female pleasure” will definitely come back to bite her. I’d give it a 6.5/10 #DontWorryDarling

#DontWorryDarling the promotion of the movie was so off compared to what the movie is
I understand Florence’s angriness towards O, I would be angry to if I delivered what she delivered and the promotion was made off a fake feminism discourse and female pleasure/sex scenes— elsa :): (@heseversince) September 21, 2022
