Issey Miyake SS23 Honored the Late Designer Through Dance

Featuring voluminous shoulders, curved silhouettes and buoyant knits.

Issey Miyake presented its first collection since the late designer passed away earlier this year, beginning with a solemn tribute at Paris Fashion Week.

“A Form That Breathes” was the Japanese brand’s Spring Summer 2023 offering, drawing influence from the creative process of sculpting. Treating each piece of clothing as its own sculpture made of fabric, the collection draws attention to the fluidity of form, with an emphasis on movement.

Made up of seven distinct focal points, SS23 sees Miyake’s “TORSO” series take center stage. Hand-sculpted by the brand’s design team, each torso shape consists of a single piece of fabric, finding its form through the way it drapes on the body. The collection also includes a range of coats and shirts, made from lightweight, stretchy fabrics that have been treated with a water-repellent finish. Elsewhere, Miyake’s SS23 features voluminous shoulders, curved silhouettes and buoyant knits, made by fusing a multitude of techniques and patterns.

Taking the brand’s signature pleating to the next level, the collection introduces circular pleats with fabrics made from plant-based sources. For its final knitwear offering, SS23 featured a “NUDE” series, representing abstract sculptures inspired by the body itself. Using sheer yarns and three-dimensional effects, each piece can also be worn backwards, acting as a sculpture itself.

Completing this season’s showcase was a powerfully choreographed interpretive dance. Emphasizing the natural fluidity of each garment, the SS23 presentation offered a masterclass in movement like no other.
