Gabrielle Union on Why She Felt "Entitled" to Cheat In First Marriage
Is she toxic? Or does she have a point?
Actor Gabrielle Union joined The Armchair Expert podcast and discussed her former dysfunctional marriage and cheating mishaps.
Currently married to NBA player Dwayne Wade and stepmother to his daughter Zaya Wade, Union has become a role model for inclusive families of color worldwide. However, her latest interview revealed that her current healthy marriage came after an unhealthy relationship with her ex-husband and Jacksonville Jaguars player, Chris Howard.
During the episode, the show’s host and Union discussed their shortcomings, specifically infidelity. According to her, “It was such a stupid relationship that should have never got out of the dating phase.” In her opinion, she wasn’t securing “wife of the year awards,” and the marriage was “dysfunctional from day one.”
As for why, Union revealed that she “was paying all the bills,” and “working my a** off and I felt like that’s what comes, the spoils of riches.” As a result, she felt empowered to do whatever she wanted to as the breadwinner. However, the dysfunction did not end there. ”In my first marriage, neither one of us felt like the marriage should get in the way of our dating,” she said — despite the marriage being monogamous. “A part of it was like keeping up with his activities, like, ‘Oh, that’s what you’re doing? You’re going to feel this one.’ And I just felt entitled to it as well.”
Union and Howard eventually divorced in 2006 after five years of marriage and married Wade almost a decade later. So, if you’re currently in a toxic relationship, there’s definitely hope.
