Assouline Celebrates Barbie's 65th Anniversary With This New Book

Including a never-before-seen image of the first-ever Barbie and quotes from Margot Robbie.

2023 has undoubtedly been the year of Barbie. From a deeply transformative reclamation of girl power and femininity to Margot Robbie’s on-screen portrayal, Barbie and all she stands for has had an innate impact on the world around us this year, and to celebrate, Assouline is releasing a brand new book that commemorates the 65-year-long legacy.

Releasing as we celebrate the 65th anniversary of Barbie, the book aims to showcase the fascinating history of Ruth Handler’s iconic creation, sharing her convention-defying ways and documenting the way she changed the perception of femininity. Taking readers on a journey, decade by decade, the book explores the evolution of Barbie from 1959 through to today, with never-before-seen imagery and quotes from pioneering women.

“My whole philosophy of Barbie was that through the doll, the little girl could be anything she wanted to be. Barbie always represented the fact that a woman has choices,” once said Ruth Handler, creator of Barbie. Echoing that sentiment, Assouline’s book celebrates Barbie becoming an astronaut in 1965, the first female U.S. president in 1992 and the many careers she’s had since then.

Take a closer look at what to expect from Assouline’s Barbie above, and head to the website to purchase the book on its November 9 launch date.

In other news, Harry Potter legend Maggie Smith stars in LOEWE’s new campaign.
