Take a Look at Josh Denzel’s Debut NBA Collection
The sports presenter explores the inspirations behind the designs.
With the recent announcement of Josh Denzel as Primark’s latest sportswear ambassador, the sports presenter has teamed up with the retailer to design his first-ever NBA collection.
Despite being born and raised in London, Denzel’s fascination with the basketball league derived from being in tune with popular culture. “There’s something glamorous about US sports, especially basketball. I used to watch it as a kid and I dreamt of emulating the NBA legends,” he explains. And it’s the foundation of fusing sport and fashion, which NBA players pioneered, that is now being embraced and translated into other sports around the world.
Tapping into past trips to the US where “over the years I’ve created a kind of mood board of references” this is what inspired this latest collection. Working closely with the design team to establish a full ready-to-wear range, it’s collaborating with the NBA that has always been a dream for Denzel. Leaning on his personal style that mainly includes “casual, oversized and loose fitted” garments, the 29-piece range brings an elevated approach to lifestyle sportswear.
Comprised of a selection of T-shirts, hoodies, pants, and outwear pieces, the AW23 collection incorporates the colorways and iconography of the league’s top teams including the Chicago Bulls, LA Lakers, Toronto Raptors and Milwaukee Bucks. As well as boasting oversized silhouettes, the garments are crafted from heavyweight fabrics and arrive with details such as textured appliqué patches.
For Denzel, it was about “combining a collegiate feel with the NBA and a bit of London influence.” With each item designed to complement the next, he describes the collection as being “Built for layering. Taking a few items and putting it together whilst not being too in your face.”
