Rising South Korean 3D artist Surin Kim is bringing her iconic toys to life as limited edition collectibles at the heart of Art Basel Miami Beach. In collaboration with American Express, PlayLab Inc. and Mattel Creations, the interactive gallery titled “PLAY by American Express Platinum” will feature exclusive playful works that blur the lines between toys and collectible art.

Ahead of the show, we caught up with Kim to learn more about her “Be Happy and Be Rich” masterpiece and how she uses nostalgia as a medium for joy. Read on for the full interview and, if you’re attending Art Basel Miami Beach this season, don’t miss the exhibition which will run from December 7-9 at The Miami Beach EDITION.

Can you tell us about your creative process as a 3D UV artist and how you incorporate nostalgia into your artwork?

I have a daily routine of drawing 100 sketches. The nostalgia I put incorporate into my work is always an element of the 100 designs I do daily. For this piece, I tried to make the Korean 2000’s come to life, which was the message “Be Happy and Be Rich.” This is a very common greeting from Korea. We greet each other like a lucky charm.

What can viewers expect to experience or feel when they encounter your installation?

The common greeting. I want to compare it to the complex society we’re experiencing these days, I want everyone to be really as the words say, happy and be rich.

What aspects or elements of your installation are you particularly excited about?

One of my “wow” points in my sculpture is the shape itself. It’s very fun to look at. Although it’s very complex for other people, I hope the audience enjoys the shape. Also, there is a smile point, which showcases a smile emoji in a toy car. I want people to appreciate the small details and smile.

What advice or words of encouragement would you give to aspiring artists who are interested in pursuing a career in 3D art?

Just do your best to improve your craft because, with social media, you can reach anyone anywhere. So, my hope for any emerging artist would be for them to really focus on their unique abilities and enjoy the little moments.
