Stone Island's Prototype Research Series Is Pure, Modern Alchemy
Introducing thermochromic technology that reacts to temperature changes.
Stone Island’s Prototype Research Series is known for its innovative fabrics and experimental treatments that have yet to be industrialized and its latest release is no exception. Series 07 features a special thermochromic technology that reacts to temperature changes, revealing a spectrum of unexpected iridescence.
The fabric is coated with helical-shaped cholesteric liquid crystals ink, which creates a molecular reactive color change system that spans shades of yellow and green, then flows into blues, producing a unique and changeable effect. Developed in collaboration with the British duo Sara and Sarah, Liquid Crystal Heat Reactive is a black-based fabric that is entirely transformed when exposed to heat.
To showcase the new technology, Stone Island has unveiled an installation featuring two Series 07 pieces in Liquid Crystal Heat Reactive displayed on a raised platform in a black space. The fabric is exposed to heat and then cooled, revealing a broad spectrum of colors. LED screens project a microscopic investigation of the cholesteric liquid crystals, providing a mesmerizing visual experience.
The limited edition of 100 pieces will be on display at Milan Design Week 2023, at Stone Island’s showroom located on Via Savona 54 from April 18-23. Take a look at the installation in the gallery above.
