REMAIN Explores What It Means to Be Original for SS24
“When you look in the mirror, that is the most original person you can be.” — Denise Christensen.
REMAIN presented its Spring/Summer 2024 showcase at Copenhagen Fashion Week, exploring “what it is to be original.” Encouraging its wearer to look into themselves, the collection was presented in a reflective room of mirrors, with nowhere to hide.
“The whole inspiration around originality actually came up on the last show. With the diverse cast, I was just looking at each person being themselves. When you look in the mirror, that is the most original person you can be,” Denise Christensen tells Hypebae backstage.
Offering a fusion of high-quality tailoring with contemporary silhouettes, SS24 aims to honor the “traditions of masculine suiting” but with a powerful, feminine twist. Every decision is deeply intentional, with Christensen noting the effects of the pandemic as having a big impact. “Coming out of COVID, suddenly there was an urge also to dress up a little bit more somehow and be a little bit stronger.”
Leaning into the distinctive shape of the female form, the collection favors hourglass volumes, ruched waists and in-built boning. An act of balance, wide shoulders, strong cuts and cocoon sleeves are juxtaposed by delicate counterparts, arriving in the form of sheer tops, sequinned layers and bodysuits. “The contrast was very important for us. You have some sculptural pieces, and then some sheer lightness,” Christensen adds.
Speaking about the rise of sheer clothing, the designer states, quite simply, that: “A person should wear whatever she wants to wear.”
Alongside the collection itself, the showcase marked a pivotal moment for the Birger Christensen Collective, announcing Asbjørn as the new creative director of REMAIN. With SS24 co-created by Christensen and Asbjørn, FW24 is set to mark the new creative director’s first solo collection for the brand.
