"The Missing Thread" Captures a Long-Overdue Portrait of Black British Fashion
Arriving at Somerset House on September 21.
This autumn, Somerset House brings the dynamic tapestry of Black British fashion into focus with “The Missing Thread,” an exhibition curated by the Black Orientated Legacy Development Agency (BOLD). Spanning from the ’70s to the present, the showcase dives deep into the profound influence of Black British culture on the landscape of British design.
“The Missing Thread” weaves together the narrative of Black British style against a backdrop of cultural transformation. Organized around key themes—home, tailoring, performance and nightlife—contextualized within a socio-political framework, the exhibition offers a dynamic dialogue between garments, art, music and installations.
A major highlight is the unveiling of the archive of the late Joe Casely-Hayford, an influential Black fashion designer. Additionally, the exhibition showcases original commissions from contemporary Black designers like Nicholas Daley, Bianca Saunders and Saul Nash.
Don’t miss “The Missing Thread: Untold Stories of Black British Fashion,” running at Somerset House’s East Wing galleries from September 21, 2023, to January 7, 2024.
In other art and design news, Jonathan Anderson’s wackiest designs take center stage at his debut exhibition.
