Manuel Mathieu's Debut Fragrance Collection Is a Work of Art
The three inaugural scents reflect the painter’s heritage, inner world and artistic journey.
Multidisciplinary artist Manuel Mathieu is venturing into the world of scent with the debut of his first fragrance collection. Renowned for his expressive art , he brings the same colorful creativity to this new olfactory medium.
Inspired by his time in Paris during an artist residency, Mathieu fell in love with perfumery. Made in collaboration with International Flavors & Fragrances , the brand marries scent and craft in a trio of fragrances: “île noire,” “Dsire” and “ECCCO.”
“This new presence is deeply precious to me. I hope the three scents facilitate a moment or experience to reconnect with ones beautiful aura and sit with oneself in a very subtle way,” Mathieu tells us. “While developing my sensitivity through painting, I was fascinated to discover that this language shares similarities with the construction and research of fragrances. The brand was designed to craft transformative moments of connection, with our perfumes awakening the creator within each of us.”
The first fragrance, “île noire,” captures the essence of Mathieu’s youth in Haiti. A delicate mixture of jasmine, ambergris and tobacco, the scent is a window into his adolescent life. Next, “ECCCO” is a fusion of sandalwood, citrus, leather and vanilla, designed to mirror a volcanic eruption. Finally, “Dsire” transports you back to the Caribbean, featuring the frangipani flower from the garden of Mathieu’s childhood home. With its floral heart, grounded by musk and vetiver, it offers a scent that feels both personal and nostalgic. Each item is crafted as a work of art, designed in a ceramic studio to reflect the natural curves and forms of the Earth itself.
