Hattie Crowther Just Reworked Classic Football Kits Into Cozy Winter Hats
Real Madrid, Arsenal and AC Milan to beat the cold.
Hattie Crowther is one of the best upcyclers in the game right now, using football kits to create everything from corsets to button-down shirts. For her latest project, she decided to try her hand at headwear, designing a full collection of winter hats using jerseys from some of the world’s most iconic clubs. The “Soft Armour” collection champions sustainability, as all of Crowther’s designs do, extending the lifespan of kits by transforming them into a unique and functional addition to the wardrobe.
The collection uses both retro and modern jerseys from major football clubs, including Arsenal, Barcelona, Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain. Similar in style to aviator hats and loosely resembling medieval chainmail hoods, the hats feature built-in, multifunctional neck ties that can double as a scarf. Padded and non-padded versions offer versatility, with some clubs even getting both versions of the design.
Football’s carbon footprint, and what can be done to reduce it, has long been up for debate. Despite the sport making efforts to be more eco-friendly, most clubs these days release upwards of four kits every season, not including the many lifestyle collections and special anniversary jerseys that drop every year. Designers like Crowther are finding their own ways to deal with the excess, giving kits new life rather than letting them go to waste. Each design is its own form of environmental activism in a creative, accessible way.
The “Soft Armour” collection is available to purchase now on the Hattie Crowther website.
