Why the NWSL Needs an All-Star Weekend

Following the success of the WNBA’s All-Star Game, a gap in the market has become even more obvious. Is it time for the NWSL go the All-Star route?

Summer is the season of All-Stars. At least it is in the United States. The concept of an All-Star Game is unique to the American sporting landscape. It’s a showcase of the league’s best and most popular talents, framed by engaging fan-focused events, brand activations and skills challenges. Though the NFL’s version looks a bit different, every major American sports league has an All-Star Weekend except for one — the NWSL.

The NWSL, aka the National Women’s Soccer League, is relatively new compared to the NBA or even MLS and the WNBA. Only in its 13th year of operation, it’s understandable why an All-Star game wouldn’t be the league’s main priority as it juggles expansion teams, broadcast deals and an influx of brand partnerships. However, following the incredible success of this summer’s WNBA All-Star Game, perhaps it’s time to start thinking about it.

At the moment, the weekend surrounding the Championship serves a sort of two-in-one deal. Rather than hosting an annual All-Star Weekend, the league presents the traditional Skills Challenge the day before the Championship game, mixing the fun of All-Star with the hype associated with the final game of the season. It is a genius idea, and a fairly new development as the league has grown in size and popularity in the last few years, but there is still a feeling that the NWSL could be doing more to capitalize on its increased prevalence in the sporting space.

The 2026 WNBA All-Star Game was a massive success, outselling this year’s NBA showcase by nearly 5,000 and breaking the league’s All-Star attendance record for the first time since 2007. The popularity, investment and media coverage surrounding the WNBA is similar to the NWSL’s, so why not lean into American tradition and embrace the heritage of an All-Star Weekend?

The NWSL has everything it takes to host a successful All-Star event — the players, the fans and the culture. With 14 teams currently playing and two more set to debut in 2028, the league is bigger and better than ever before. It boasts some of the biggest names in women’s soccer, and has arguably the best fan culture in the game. After years of successful theme nights and record-breaking attendances, it’s clear that NWSL fans show up when their favorite teams and players are involved. Now imagine all of the league’s fans coming together for one special weekend a year.

The difference between a Championship and an All-Star game lies in the stakes and who is all-in for the biggest night of the season versus a one-off event. Despite sold-out crowds and record-breaking attendances for Championship games the last few years, the majority of fans attending the Championship are supporters of either of the two teams playing that year.

The potential an All-Star Game creates for league-wide attendance could double or even triple those already impressive turnouts. Last season’s Championship sold out, even with two East Coast rivals going head-to-head across the country in California. Now imagine your favorite players from across the league playing with and against each other for one night only.

Part of the beauty of the NWSL is the fans’ ability to support players from different and even rival teams while being diehard fans of their local club. A Chicago Stars fan might be obsessed with Trinity Rodman, and a Denver Summit supporter could easily be Temwa Chawinga’s greatest admirer. A lot of it stems from the league’s role in developing most of the United States Women’s National Team players, with the majority of the squad currently playing for an NWSL club.

That dominance that drives the USWNT fanbase to follow the NWSL and vice versa is what makes the concept of an NWSL All-Star Weekend such an exciting prospect. For fans that developed an interest in the league because of the national team, there is an opportunity to see what the NWSL’s crème de la crème have to offer. For the NWSL faithful, it’s a dream come true to watch some of the league’s biggest names playing alongside each other for the very first time.

The NWSL is one of the most competitive yet fun leagues to watch, and a lot of that is down to the players and the culture they have cultivated over the last decade. What drew people to the WNBA All-Star Game, the NWSL has in spades.

Of course, hosting an All-Star Game is more than just devoted fan bases and star players. It takes years of planning, logistics and scheduling to get off the ground. Could we see an NWSL All-Star Game in the next few years? Who knows. One thing is for certain, though. The league is still young and finding its footing in the greater scheme of things, but an NWSL All-Star Weekend would be one for the books.
