What Do Dermatologists Actually Think About the Milky Skincare Trend?
Here’s why one skincare expert says milky products “aren’t unique.”
Rhode might’ve seemingly started the milky skincare craze with its cult-favorite Glazing Milk — but now, milky products have expanded far beyond just toners. While beauty fans are searching high and low for budget-friendly alternatives to Rhode’s viral Glazing Milk toner, beauty brands are simultaneously formulating brand new milky products for every step of the skincare routine.
Whether its Tatcha‘s Dewy Milk Moisturizer or Paula’s Choice‘s Milky Hydrating Serum, milky products are taking the beauty world by storm. Categorized by their liquidy texture and the promise of glowy skin, milky skincare products have become known for accomplishing that sought-after glass skin look. However, while tons of milky products are incredibly effective at making the skin visibly more radiant, dermatologists say they aren’t exactly their own category of products — and they’re not inherently unique.

In fact, board-certified dermatologist Dr. Viktoryia Kazlosukaya finds that most milky products are pretty dissimilar from each other. “Products with milky textures don’t necessarily share the same ingredients. For example, Rhode’s Glazing Milk contains glycerin and ceramides, while Tatcha’s Dewy Skin Cream features glycerin and hyaluronic acid,” she says. So, while varying milky products might be effective for a wide range of skin concerns, examining a product’s ingredients is usually the way to go.
Beyond that, Dr. Kazlosukaya also adds that milky products are merely another iteration of skincare steps we’re already taking. But, the popularity of milky products might be due to the fact that beauty fans are becoming increasingly aware of how products feel on the skin. “Skincare is also a luxury experience, and many people enjoy the sensory element of textures,” the dermatologist says. In the case of milky toners, serums and moisturizers, their watery consistency feels lightweight on the skin while also providing a sufficient amount of hydration.

So, while milky skincare isn’t exactly a revolutionary innovation, there’s tons of reasons why skincare lovers are adding the coveted products to their daily routines. Although they can differ greatly in both ingredients and their ability to target specific skin concerns, milky products are a satisfying and straightforward way to achieve glowy skin.
