Gap and Harlem’s Fashion Row Reimagine Denim for Black History Month
Showcasing work from five emerging Black designers.
Gap and Harlem’s Fashion Row have joined forces again for a denim capsule uplifting the work of Black designers. Arriving during Black History Month, the release serves as a special nod to Black creatives and their impact on the wider fashion industry, giving five emerging names a platform to showcase their style. With a campaign photographed by Ghanaian-American photographer Joshua Kissi, every shade of blue jeans is modeled by the designers themselves: Daveed Baptiste, LaTouché, Igdaliah Pickering, Waina Chancy and Nicole Benefield.
The 20-piece collection breathes new life into one of Gap’s cornerstones of American design: denim. Each designer created four pieces for the overall collection, culminating in a beautiful patchwork of jeans in all washes and styles. Incorporating their backgrounds, experiences and design codes into the collection, like Chancy’s Haitian hibiscus flower buttons and Pickering’s ocean-inspired hues, the drop is a reflection of Black culture and fashion in all its forms.
In a press release, Harlem’s Fashion Row CEO and founder Brandice Daniel said “Denim evolves when new voices are given the opportunity to lead. What makes this collaboration with Gap successful is the ability for designers to authentically reinterpret an iconic brand, while Gap connects them with new audiences. The resulting collection is strong, globally relevant and built to resonate across international markets; that’s when a partnership truly works.”
The Gap x HFR collection will be available to purchase starting February 13 on the Gap website and select retail locations.
In other news, Uniqlo and JW Anderson’s new collection is on the way.
