Playground Kicks Are in Their High Fashion Era

And we have thousands of teenagers across the nation to thank for it…

I have always associated boat shoes with lockers, exams and squeaky hallway floors. When you go to school where a uniform and dress code repress individuality, little trends emerge amongst the student population, skewing the rules to center around a hot new product. Michael Kors watches, Longchamp bags and Hunter boots have all captivated my suburban school at one point. I never fell for those particular fads, but one I could not escape was the sudden obsession with boat shoes.

As someone who witnessed her peers switch from Mary Janes and loafers to Sperry Top-Siders in the blink of an eye, the mere mention of boat shoes takes me back to high school history classes and cafeteria food. I never viewed my school shoes as footwear that could exist outside the realm of academia and plaid skirts, but as boat shoes have slowly become the footwear of choice from Miu Miu and Monse to Aritzia, my perception has changed.

I have no idea where my old Sperrys are — probably donated or in the possession of a distant relative. Suddenly, I wish I hadn’t disregarded them the day I received my diploma. Boat shoes are slowly popping up everywhere now, and the styling opportunities are endless. Of course, they had a purpose before school children made them the shoe of choice to go with khaki pants and pleated skirts, but what is the inspiration behind the boat shoe’s current revival? Is it purely a newfound desire for the coastal, nautical aesthetic, or are school kids the new tastemakers?

Miu Miu spearheaded the recent fashionable return of the boat shoe during its Spring/Summer 2024 show, and the Italian brand’s take on the style was met with mixed reviews. For such an unassuming silhouette, boat shoes are much more divisive than one would think.

For me, the shoes are a reminder of adolescence, awkward years and barely passing algebra. For others that didn’t share that private school uniform experience, boat shoes are reminiscent of right-wing fraternity brothers, salmon-colored slacks and conservative America. The overlap of the two is why I find my desire for a new pair of Sperrys ten years later so troubling, especially in this political climate.

Rather than leaning into that aesthetic for shock value, fashion is reclaiming the boat shoe, prying it from the hands of the not-so-fashionably-minded citizen and reshaping it as a trend that everyone wants to hop on. In reality, boat shoes are comfortable, practical for rainy cities and a quick style fix for any outfit all year long. A small percentage of the population shouldn’t stop people from wearing whatever shoes they want, and if Miuccia Prada has given boat shoes the all-clear, who are we to object?

The preppy styling of boat shoes in this day and age does offer an elevated take on school uniforms, which more than likely fueled their chic return to the mainstream. After years of private school students singlehandedly funding their manufacture, boat shoes are better than ever.

Playground kicks are in their high fashion era, and we have thousands of teenagers across the nation to thank for it. It’s hard to give the kids credit where it’s due, but this trend is one where they have to be given their flowers.

Some of your favorite brands, from the runway to the high street, are churning out their own versions of the classic silhouette. Your favorite celebrities are being papped in boat shoes right now. The current obsession in fashionable circles has been two years in the making, but for the masses of pre-teens at prep schools across the country, the boat shoe is a hallmark of their youth.

Even if the trend dies out in the fashion space in the next few years, boat shoes will be another sign of the times when we’re reminiscing about old trends in a decade or so. Maybe we’re all just chasing a fragment of the youth we’ve lost. Maybe it’s not that deep, and boat shoes are another fad we’ve stumbled across and will discard as quickly as we found them. Either way, I have a pair of Sperrys in my cart just waiting for me to check out, and eventually that urge to join in on the trend will be too much for me to resist.
