Hayley Kiyoko Debuts "What I Need" Music Video Featuring Kehlani
Watch the grungy, sun-filled short here.
Following up on the release of Hayley Kiyoko‘s debut album, Expectations, the singer releases a visual for the track, “What I Need” featuring Kehlani. In the beginning of the film-style video Kehlani leaves her home after an intense argument with her aunt who believes she is in a relationship with her best friend, played by Kiyoko.
What entails after Kehlani leaves the house is an energetic, wild ride. Both singers who clearly have feelings for one another beyond friendship run away together in a bright-yellow vintage car. The video appears to be set in California at a light-filled bar, then outside as Kiyoko and Kehlani drive aimlessly through stretches of nothingness. After hitting the bar, the two songstresses flirt in the car up until a crash almost happens.
The two then attempt to hitchhike which leads to them hopping in the trunk of pick-up truck. After they ride for a bit, the driver realizes the two are there, which leads to an overly-aggressive confrontation. Kehlani then ends up agreeing to a ride from the uncanny driver.
At the end, Kiyoko is seen walking alone on the stretches of dirt. As she’s walking feeling defeated, she spots Kehlani who approaches in the distance and the two finally embrace and kiss, accepting that they’re more than friends.
