Hasan Minhaj‘s Netflix Original series Patriot Act explores the modern cultural and political landscape through impeccable comedic timing and riveting storytelling skills. In the wake of the recent killing of George Floyd, the comedian’s latest episode urges everyone, especially the Asian community, to not stay silent amid these trying times.
The segment starts off with an image of former White Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin pinning down Floyd in the neck with his leg to the ground. “As horrific as it is, it is all too familiar. Another Black person dying at the hands of police screaming, ‘I can’t breathe.’ This time we cannot stay silent, especially the Asian community,” Minhaj says.
Towards the middle of the show, the Indian-American talent expresses his frustration towards the Asian community on how many view and treat the Black community. “I can’t speak to what it’s like to be Black, but I know how we talk about Black people and it is f*cked up because it is a microcosm of America. Asians, we love seeing black excellence … on screen in our living rooms. But if a Black man walks into your living room or wants to date, god forbid, marry your daughter, you call the cops.” He continues: “We love seeing how high a Black person can ascend in America, but we have done nothing to raise the floor.”
