Beauty Brand Gabar Presents Its First Line of Sensorial Fragrances

An ode to Myanmar’s beauty and diversity.

Founded in 2020 by Phway Su Aye and Su Zar Wai Hnin, Gabar is a mind and body fragrance brand that pays homage to Myanmar’s beauty and diversity. For its inaugural launch, the label has released a trio of sensorial perfumes.

“Being able to support a new generation in using the tenets of mindfulness to slow down and become more confident in their voice and identity is at the root of Gabar,” Aye shares with HYPEBAE. “To us, fragrance and beauty can be important platforms for this. Scent has the ability to quite viscerally bring back memories and change the state of mind in a way that no other sense can.” Hnin added: “We wanted to embrace the idea of fragrance layering and mixing and matching, and flip the idea of a gendered signature scent to not have fragrance feel so precious and rigid.”

The first offering, dubbed “Float,” boasts a soft, decadent floral scent thanks to its lemongrass, bergamot and basil notes. “Ground” caters to those who prefer dark and creamy notes as it comes with hints of pink pepper, saffron, ginger and coriander. Finally, “Swim” is infused with jungle notes of blackcurrant bud and galbanum, which is merged with wild fig, jasmine, orris and green tea.

Starting in 2021, 10% of the company’s proceeds will go towards the restoration of Myanmar every year. Donations will also be allocated to Prospect Burma, a U.K.- and Myanmar-based charity that provides scholarships for Myanmar youth. In addition to the perfumes, Gabar is set to drop two more beauty products later this year inspired by the “new urban youth.”

Priced at £120 GBP (approximately $165 USD) each, “Float,” “Ground” and “Swim” are now available via Gabar’s website.
