Climate Activists Vandalize Monet's 'Grainstacks' Painting With Mashed Potatoes
A week after the van Gogh ‘Sunflowers’ painting tomato soup incident.
Another pair of protesters have tried to get their message across by vandalizing classic art. Most recently, the climate activists visited the Museum Barberini in Germany to throw mashed potatoes at Claude Monet’s Grainstacks painting.
The man and woman covered the glass-protected painting with mashed potatoes, then glued their hands to the wall. Letzte Generation, a German activist organization that battles climate change, took to Instagram to share a statement explaining the reason for the activists’ vandalization of the piece.
“Is anybody listening?” read a caption. “We won’t be able to provide for our families. Countless people will die. These two people were locked up for warning. Those who continue to promote the climate emergency daily are at home with their families. If it takes a painting — thrown in mashed potatoes — for society to remember that fossil fuel course is killing us all: we’ll give you mashed potatoes on a painting!”
The art attack was similar to one that occurred earlier this month in which two protestors tossed tomato soup at Van Gogh’s Sunflowers painting at the National Gallery in London.
