The First Teaser Trailer for Adult-Animated Series 'Velma' Cleverly Pokes Fun at the Internet
The ‘Scooby-Doo’ spin-off is gruesome and features an Indian Velma.
UPDATE (October 7, 2022): HBO Max has shared the first official teaser trailer for Velma — the upcoming Scooby-Doo spin-off.
In the preview, fans get a first look at Velma Dinkley (voiced by Mindy Kaling), who’s now reimagined as an Indian character. Additionally, Velma pokes fun at the internet’s reaction to her change in ethnicity and appearance.
“Dear HBO Max, I just learned you intend to make a genre-bending, comedic origin story of Judy Jetson,” Velma says in the teaser. “When I heard this new version of Judy Jetson wouldn’t be boy crazy, the only word I had to describe my disgust is ‘Jinkies!’ If there is one thing the internet agrees on, it’s that you should never change anything, ever. I hope you die!”
“Well, at least Judy’s still white,” she adds, before a serial killer mysteriously calls, breaks in and makes an appearance.
You can expect the rest of the mystery solving gang to be featured on the show — Sam Richardson as Shaggy, Constance Wu as Daphne and Glenn Howerton as Fred. Unfortunately, Scooby-Doo will reportedly not be making an appearance.
Velma will start streaming on HBO Max sometime in 2023. Watch the first official teaser trailer above.
ORIGINAL STORY (October 6, 2022): HBO Max has taken to social media to tease its upcoming Scooby Doo spin-off Velma, featuring Mindy Kaling as the lead voice actor and executive producer.
Unlike Scooby-Doo, Velma, though still animated, is not suitable for kids. The first official poster reiterates that, featuring Velma Dinkley’s glasses splattered with blood.
The official synopsis reads as follows: “Velma is an adult animated comedy series telling the origin story of Velma Dinkley, the unsung and under appreciated brains of the Scooby-Doo Mystery Inc. gang. An original and humorous spin that unmasks the complex and colorful past of one of America’s most beloved mystery solvers, executive producer Mindy Kaling will voice the titular character. Charlie Grandy, Howard Klein and Sam Register also serve as executive producers. Velma is produced by Warner Bros. Animation.”
Most recently, Velma garnered online attention for coming out as lesbian in the Halloween-themed HBO Max film Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo! However, it remains unclear if Velma will still be part of the LGTBQ+ community in the new series.
Velma will be coming soon to HBO Max. Check out the first official poster for the series below.
