'Skinamarink,' the Buzzy Horror Film Taking Over Social Media, Will Give You Nightmares
The movie, which has been much talked about in horror communities, will be hitting theaters soon.
If you’re into scary movies, you might want to add Skinamarink to your watchlist, as it’s been described as “100 minutes of dread” by many in horror communities.
Produced with a tight budget of $15,000 USD, Skinamarink is written and directed by Kyle Edward Ball and premiered earlier this year at the 2022 Fantasia International Film Festival in Montréal. Since then, an illegal pirated copy circulated on social media, quickly building buzz. Earlier this week, the movie was picked up by Shudder and will be receiving a theatrical release early next year.
Set in 1995, the movie — shot in Ball’s actual childhood home in Alberta, Canada — is presented from the perspective of two young children, Kevin and Kaylee, aged 4 and 6 years old. The two wake up in the middle of the night and realize their father isn’t there, while all doors and windows in their home have disappeared with the only light in the house coming from the television. Throughout the film, the perspective changes between the eyes of the children and the house, adding to the suspense.
Skinamarink has taken over social media for how disturbing and scary it is, with users on Twitter noting that they aren’t able to sleep and are terrified after watching the movie. “I realized what Skinamarink reminds me of… So sometimes you read a story about a like, forbidden movie, that if you watch it something bad happens. but no one ever describes what the movie is. Skinamarink feels like THAT movie but it’s real somehow,” a user wrote.
Watch the teaser above, if you dare to. Skinamarink will hit theaters in the U.S. on January 13, 2023 while it will be available to stream via Shudder at a later date.
