Take an Official Look at Nike SB's 4/20 Dunk
The Swoosh continues their legacy of 4/20 drops with “Green Apple.”
According to legend, the origins of April 20 as a day to celebrate cannabis culture originated in 1971 by a group of high school students in San Rafael, California who called themselves “The Waldos.” This group of friends would meet at 4:20 p.m. to smoke and search for a rumored marijuana plants in the area, adopting “420” as a code for their endeavors. The term allegedly made its way to The Grateful Dead and was heavily adopted by their fan base.
The earliest known celebration of 4:20 as 4/20 was in 1990 when a group of Deadheads from Oakland, California distributed flyers inviting people to smoke “420” at 4:20pm on 4/20. The rest is history.
As marijuana usage continues to garner mainstream favor, brands have become less and less veiled with exclusive product honoring 4/20. Nike SB has been a purveyor in the lane, with a particularly rich history of tongue-in-cheek drops for the special date — a natural fit as skateboard and cannabis cultures have several intersections.
Since 2004, SB has delivered coveted Dunks surrounding April 20 such as the “Skunk,” “Cheech & Chong” and “Maui Wowie.” After leaked images of a four-part Fruit Pack began circulating in January, many speculated that the vibrant pairs would be part of a 4/20 rollout, which now appears to be the case.
