Ripley's Believe It or Not! Denies Claims That Kim Kardashian Damaged Marilyn Monroe's Dress
Noting that the gown already had tearing before the reality star wore it.
Recently, Kardashian made headlines after she was accused of damaging the late icon’s Jean Louis gown, which Monroe wore in 1962. In May, Kardashian wore the gown for a few minutes at the 2022 Met Gala before changing into a replica. What appeared to be before and after photos of the dress’s condition recently surfaced online, showing noticeable tearing. As a result, Kardashian, who admitted to losing 16 pounds to fit into the number, was accused of damaging the precious item of clothing. Since then, a rep for Ripley’s Believe It or Not! has spoken up to defend the beauty mogul.
“Kim Kardashian’s walk up the Metropolitan Museum’s stairs at this year’s Met Gala caused quite the stir, but one thing Ripley’s Believe It or Not! can say with confidence is that it did not cause damage to Marilyn Monroe’s famed ‘Happy Birthday’ dress from 1962,” Ripley’s said in a recent statement.
The rep continued, “A report written on the dress’s condition in early 2017 states, ‘a number of the seams are pulled and worn. This is not surprising given how delicate the material is. There is puckering at the back by the hooks and eyes,’ among other instances of damage.”
It turns out Ripley’s isn’t the dress’s first owner since it was in Monroe’s possession; it was acquired in 2016 at a Julien’s Auctions event with some wear and tear already.
