“Put the shampoo down, flip it and reverse it.” — Missy Elliot, probably.

We can all agree that TikTok is the go-to spot for all things beauty. The app has become a vending machine for everything related to skincare, makeup, and haircare. There are so many fun hacks and tutorials, and this latest “reverse hair washing” is one of those helpful tips everyone should try.

Amassing over 118 million views on TikTok, #reversehairwashing is precisely what may first come to mind. The process involves inverting the order in which you’d use your hair wash products. Instead of shampoo first, you’d go in with conditioner. Though it may sound backward, as in French, the word “conditioner” translates to “after shampoo,” there are many benefits to this order. By first using conditioner and then shampoo, you’re removing a lot of the conditioner making your hair lighter to manage as conditioner is known to weigh the tresses down and shampoo strips your hair of natural oils, especially those with sulfates.

Those on TikTok who have entrusted this application claim that the method made their hair lighter, softer and more voluminous, but in theory reverse hair washing is not normally as practical for dry, coarse or curly hair, which benefits from the process of conditioning. However, if done right, it can definitely pay off. Overall the most important thing is using the method to find the right balance of softness, hydration and moisture that works for your hair type.
