Glenn Martens' Y/Project FW23 Featured Screenshots of Porn Films on Dresses

Inspired by George Frideric Handel’s Italian-language soprano aria.

Glenn Martens showcased Y/Project‘s Fall/Winter 2023 collection this season at Paris Fashion Week, revolving around composer Handel’s famous work, “Lascia ch’io pianga.”

According to the show notes, the piece features lyrics “filled with pain,” which also carry elements of “serenity and solemnity.” This sets the scene for Y/Project’s FW23 showcase, combining an eclectic mix of distressed denim, dramatically oversized silhouettes and embroidered dresses — the latter of which marked a pretty big shift for the brand.

Delving into themes of irony, freedom and individuality, the collection sees dresses adorned with screenshots of pornographic films, while accessories take the form of leather and wire bags. The collection is rounded out by slouchy boots covered in excess material and designed with functionality in mind, boasting snap buttons which allow its wearer to adapt the shape and size.

As always, Y/Project favors sculptured silhouettes as a way to transform conventional pieces, highlighted this season through arm and ankle-hugging straps, fluid cutouts and billowy, draping fabrics. Jewelry takes center stage this season, representing different hand signs in an attempt to offer “a gesture of unity.”
