How To Do Paris in Style

From chic hotels and cozy cafes to our fave stores, here’s the Local Hype: fashion week edition.

Welcome to Local Hype, a travel diary where we compile a curated list of our “Hometown Heroes” for you to enjoy. Featuring the buzziest hotels, restaurants and local treasures that we’ve experienced for ourselves, suggested by the city’s locals.

Next on the agenda? Paris, the fashion week edition.

The chic French city is fun to visit all year round, and for many of the fashion crowd, it becomes somewhat of a second home, the four to six times a year that we frequent it. As a result, you need a pretty solid list of hotels, shops and restaurants in which to spend your time and, of course, a reliable and comfortable way to get from A to B.

For us, catching the Eurostar is honestly the only way, with its lowest fares starting from GBP 39 each way (approx. USD 47) and the fastest journey time from London to Paris being just 2 hours and 16 minutes. For frequent travellers, the Eurostar Premier option offers extra seat space, a free meal on board and a plush lounge area to relax in ahead of your travels, plus extra baggage allowance and priority lanes (especially handy for enormous suitcases filled with fashion week fits).

If planning isn’t quite your thing, though, then you’re in luck… Eurostar also has its “Snap” offer, designed for those who love a last-minute trip. Offering up to 50% off fares when booked to or from London just two weeks in advance, “Snap” also works up to eight days in advance for other locations.

For our stay this season, we opted for a comforting stay at the understated Mama Shelter Paris West, perfectly located and filled with all of the home comforts we could want.

Read on for more of our top picks across accommodation, shopping and food.

Hotels and Accommodation

Mama Shelter Paris West

Mama Shelter is the perfect place to stay if you’re after something a little bit different. For lucky Dis-loyalty membership holders, the hotel can be booked directly through your membership, which gives you 20% off stays, 50% off new openings (as well as 50% off future new openings across 10 other brands like The Hoxton) and a free coffee every single day. Complete with a rooftop bar and cozy restaurant, the hotel has pretty much everything you need for a truly fashionable stay, including aesthetically pleasing messages on its chic mirrors — the perfect accompaniment to your fashion week selfies.

Shops

Charlotte Chesnais
paris fashion week restaurants hotels shops airbnb restaurants food Chesnais is one of Paris’s leading jewelry designers, known for her oblong shapes and curvy creations; think sculptures you can wear. Beyond her wares, the boutique itself is also worth admiring. Designed by architect Anne Holtrop, two imposing translucent plates look like they could be slices of icebergs, creating a daring and intriguing stage for the modern jeweler’s creations.

THE SKATEROOM
paris fashion week restaurants hotels shops airbnb restaurants food Fusing skateboarding, fine art and philanthropy, Charles-Antoine Bodson’s SKATEROOM is something of an institution. Created in 2014, it is a new model of social entrepreneurship that brings together artists, art buyers, museums, and nonprofits around the world. In short, they tap the most prominent artists (from Michèle Lamy to Slawn) to create original works on decks, which are then sold to fund social projects.

Plasir Palace
paris fashion week restaurants hotels shops airbnb restaurants food A veritable vessel of vintage fashion in the Marais, clothing collector Didier Barroso’s Plasir Palace boutique is a must-visit for archivists. Its store itself may be small, but the scale belies the treasures found within. Barroso is known for personally going through celebrity closets and industry insiders to assemble the most impressive selection around. Expect pieces by Yves Saint Laurent, Alaia, Sonia Rykiel, Chanel and Valentino. Don’t forget to take a selfie at Errore Sottsass’s Ultrafragola mirror, too.

Restaurants

Bar Omi
paris fashion week restaurants hotels shops airbnb restaurants food Bar Omi is probably one of Paris’s coolest sushi and wine bars, and for good reason. Located in the first arrondissement, the bar offers a selection of fun low-intervention wines, incredibly fresh sushi and unexpected flavor combinations. A personal highlight was the soy and sesame mochi we had for dessert.

Le Cornichon
paris fashion week restaurants hotels shops airbnb restaurants food Le Cornichon is the perfect spot for dinner with friends after a hectic day. Its casual, lo-fi atmosphere is perfectly complemented by an eclectic menu of small plates and classic dishes, plus a buzzy cocktail menu. From trays of fries and perfectly cooked sweet potatoes to fresh fish and French steak, it’s got a bit of everything.
