David Koma SS27 Channels the Drama of '90s Figure Skating
Through crystal embellishments, satin accents and feather plumes.
David Koma is taking us back to the rink. For Spring/Summer 2027, the designer looks to the theatrical glamor of 1990s competitive figure skating, where rhinestone-covered costumes and obsessive precision met a dramatic vision of femininity. Enter Tonya Harding, whose raw athleticism and determination to succeed inspire a collection balancing sporting discipline with high-octane glam.
Crystal spirals inspired by the figures once traced on ice appear across dresses as embroidery, oversized jewelry and sculptural cut-outs, each centered with mother-of-pearl. Elsewhere, satin is gathered into circular openings, while transparent black mesh creates geometric windows across the body.
Koma’s signature feather plumes bring movement to tops and skirts, joined by rows of fringe stitched onto rigid boning to create fluid, almost living silhouettes. Elevated warm-up looks pair satin bombers with voluminous shorts, while protective jackets are layered over dresses. Finally, a metallic mint knit gown pushes the collection firmly into sensual territory.
The palette channels the fantasy of the rink, moving between candyfloss pink, rose, soft mint and bright ivory, punctuated by liquid silver, black and all-over crystal embellishment. This is sure to complete all those figure skating fantasies from when you were a kid.
