This Brand Is Turning Renaissance Armor Into Lingerie
Introducing New York-based label taottao.
What happens when a knight’s armor meets your lingerie drawer? For New York-based label taottao, the answer lies somewhere between strength, sensuality and a little bit of silliness. For Spring/Summer 2027, designer Yitao Li explores the duality of femininity with “Soldier Off Work,” a collection that softens the language of Renaissance armor through delicate fabrics and playful details.
Inspired by the moment protection comes off and the person underneath emerges, Li reimagines traditional plate armor using lace, satin, mesh and ribbon. Breastplates and shoulder guards become lingerie-inspired silhouettes, while ruched jersey mimics the ridges of articulated steel. Scalloped lace edges reference the ornate borders of parade armor, and satin petals replace traditional rivets and metal detailing.
But “Soldier Off Work” isn’t all serious business. Mismatched bows, candy-colored plaids, glitter mesh and fringe inject a dose of youthful irreverence into the collection, challenging the idea that strength must come at the expense of softness.
Founded in New York in 2022, taottao has built its identity around individuality, sensuality and a willingness to go against the grain. With SS27, Li takes that ethos a step further, suggesting that armor isn’t necessarily about hiding yourself from the world. Instead, it’s about choosing how you show up and embracing every side of yourself in the process.
