Oh de Laval's "Take Your Pleasure Seriously" Exhibition Explores Lust, Rebellion and Desire

Taking over the Paris-based contemporary art gallery, Galerie Marguo.

Thai-Polish artist Oh de Laval takes over the Paris-based contemporary art gallery Galerie Marguo to showcase her new and most recent irreverent works. “Take Your Pleasure Seriously” is an exhibition that follows the artist’s solo presentation with the gallery at last year’s Art Paris fair and revives her nonconformist, saccharine and seductive universes.

According to Oh de Laval and as the show’s title suggests, the showcased paintings, drawings and sculpture are a defiant view “Against the type of commodified self-care that characterizes contemporary life,” as well as an exploration of universal human impulses. The artist explains in the show notes, “The notion of pleasure has little to do with the supplements, treatments, and trimmings packaged and sold to us under the broad guise of wellness, and everything to do with a deeply embodied understanding that hinges on the quivering boundary between sensual gratification and mortal danger.”

Across Galerie Marguo’s bright space, Oh de Laval’s acrylic paintworks exude ribald fantasies packed with visual contradictions that dissipate into abstract forms. Each painting, executed using only two to three color pigments and often including dazzling palettes of fiery oranges, bubblegum pinks and aquamarines, offer unconventional and witty stories inspired by graphic novel narrative and with the character Oh in the leading role.

Oh de Laval’s “Take Your Pleasure” is on view at Galerie Marguo until May 6. To explore the exhibition’s catalog, find more information on the artist and watch a teaser film, visit the Parisian gallery’s website.
