Creative Director Maria Grazia Chiuri celebrates Mexico and its many artists with Dior‘s Cruise 2024 collection, declaring the country “a place for the soul.”
Looking to the inimitable and iconic Frida Kahlo as it muse, Chiuri pays homage to the surrealist artist who was famously known for her independence and unapologetic individuality. “The Mexican artist transcended her body through her clothes, which became representation, proclamation, protest and affirmation. Like a precious jewel case for a broken body, a cocoon-case concealing a butterfly meta-morphed into a motif unfolding in multiple shades and forms, through a series of prints.”
Nodding to her penchant for wearing men’s clothing a time when unisex fashion wasn’t as trendy. Famously known for her independence and unapologetic individuality, the luxury brand’s latest collection is overflowing with reimagined tuxedos as velvet floor-sweeping skirts join sleek jackets with exaggerated shoulders and elaborate detailing. The resilient painter possessed a specific duality, blurring the lines between masculine and feminine. Mirroring this elusive quality, Dior’s presentation moves fluidly between suits and dresses, showcasing Kahlo’s signature pink frock Kahlo’s boldness rings true as her spirit is infused in ornately decorated dresses, welcoming lace and nature-inspired prints, featuring flora and fauna native to Mexico.
