What's the Tea With Melissa McCarthy's Ursula Makeup in 'The Little Mermaid'?

Social media is not pleased.

The Little Mermaid has beauty enthusiasts on edge as everyone is eager to see the film in live action to get into the lewks. However, actor Melissa McCarthy‘s transformation into Ursula, the iconic villain we all love to hate, is garnering less favorable opinions. Social media, particularly the LGBTQIA+ community, shared some strong thoughts.

It’s no secret that many of us were hoping that singer-songwriter Lizzo or a queer POC person would win the role of Ursula as Halle Bailey had made HERstory as the first Black Ariel. Given Ursula’s campy and androgynous character in the original Walt Disney movie, it simply would make sense. When the studios shared a first glimpse at McCarthy’s Ursula — we were all disappointed and gagged at how horrible the makeup was for a character with such a high-impact presence.

It’s no shade, McCarthy is a wonderful actor — but the makeup artist behind the glam deserves to be chopped as there will be no EGOT given for this beginner’s approach to high Drag Queen glamour. Many viewers pointed out that a true Drag Queen herself would’ve best curated the beat — and no truer words have ever been spoken. The amateur makeup gave Party City glam, not someone of iconic and enviable status. It’s a known fact that your eyebrows should be twins and not cousins, but the lack of symmetry in McCarthy’s eyebrows, paired with dry, one-dimensional eyeshadow and dreadful contour, deserves all of the reads that a queer person can give.

We can’t accept McCarthy’s makeup in this manner with a budget of around $200 million USD, the beat should have been there — but yet, the low-budget approach doesn’t reflect anything of the sort. Disney, you’ve got some explaining to do.
