Denim Is on the Menu for GCDS SS24
Swapping itty-bitty Spongebob bras for Canadian tuxedos.
Known for its provocative and loud designs, GCDS is taking a more modest approach (relatively) to Milan Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2024. Opting for a neutral color palette, creative director Giuliano Calza delivers expertly tailored denim ensembles, alongside extravagant evening wear. The collection still offers GCDS’ usual salaciousness, presenting denim underwear, bite-sized bras, exposed thongs and plenty of sheer fabric.
WHAT: GCDS’ SS24 collection is surprisingly reserved compared to the brand’s standard array of vibrant colors as a subdued shades of denim, cream and brown allow the exciting silhouettes to speak for themselves. Elevated essentials dominate the range, welcoming oversized bomber jackets, monochromatic suiting and sharply structured sweaters.
SAW: Denim is the main protagonist of GCDS’ story, taking shape in the form of leg-baring short-shorts and dramatic trench coats. Tailoring takes center stage for the SS24 collection as sweaters flaunt exaggerated shoulders with waist cut-outs joining as a common theme. Mini-dresses reveal a hint of midriff, sitting alongside spacious jeans outfitted with open waistbands. The sturdy fabric also wraps itself around the collection’s accessories as some models walked down the runway in denim knee-high boots, monogramed with GCDS’ moniker.
Meanwhile, sheer fabric overtook the collection as appearing on casual tank tops, teasing a hint of skin. Sheer socks and dainty satin ballet flats juxtaposed the more flirtatious looks, balancing GCDS’ trademark cheekiness with a sense of refinement. The collection doesn’t skimp on special occasion attire as blindingly bright shimmering sequins adorn flowing tunics and voluminous dresses.
TOUCH: Lace, leather silk, denim, sequins and jersey fabric were in abundance.
TASTE: Denim is certainly on the menu for GCDS’ SS24 collection with Calza incorporating the quintessential Y2K fabric in nearly every look. Operating from a pared-back color palette allows the artful silhouettes to stand on their own, demonstrating the brand’s celebration of the human form and the ways in which expertly crafted garments can enhance it.
