B-Girl Sarah Bee Takes Hypebae Through Her Daily Routine
The latest installment of the ‘Day in the Life’ series with Nike.
As the Summer of Sports gets fully underway, Hypebae has teamed up with Nike to spotlight four boundary-breaking athletes — going behind the scenes of their training routines for an exclusive Day in the Life series.
This episode follows French-Algerian breakdancer Sarah Bee. Revered for her dynamic moves and free body movement, she unintentionally stumbled across breaking at 11 years old when dancer, now close friend, and collaborator, Manuela invited her to a practice session in her home city of Dijon.
Since then, Bee has grown to be one of the world’s most exciting breakers. A member of the illustrious Paris-based, all-female dance group Zamounda Crew who cover a range of styles from contemporary to street. “We have a bunch of crazy dancers with crazy characters,” she says of the collective. Boasting decorated accolades in the sport such as individual and group championships both local and global — she embraces the responsibility of being an inspiration for the next generation of dancers.
Keeping active, movement, and letting loose is a key part of Bee’s daily routine. The first thing she does in the morning is practise yoga to get her day started — freeing up her body and mind. “I love to move my body and calm myself by waking up with movement,” she says. One of the key aspects that drew her to breakdance is the freedom it offers that aligns with her personal values and advocacy for self-expression, explaining, “The best thing about being a breaker is you come as you are, and do whatever you want. You just need to be yourself.”
Practice makes perfect, and Bee holds importance to training and working on her craft every day. “It’s hard to be an athlete because you have to face a lot of ups and downs,” she says of her continued journey of challenging herself to be the best. “But the whole process and adventure is what makes it beautiful.”
Exploring Paris and discovering the city’s hidden gems, and being in the outdoors to take in the fresh air is where she finds solace away from the gym. However, it’s the community around her that exemplifies her love for the physicality of the sport. “I’m proud to be French and I’m proud to be part of the breaking community here,” she concludes.
